david elfick

David Elfick's involvement in the making of both "Morning of the Earth" and "Crystal Voyager" confirms to me that the longevity and continuing popularity of "Morning of the Earth" and to a lesser extent "Crystal Voyager" has as much to do with the talent of the personnel involved as as good luck and good timing.

David Elfick along with Albe Falzon and John Witzig had started "Tracks Magazine" in 1970. "Tracks" was a broadsheet style magazine known as "Surfers Bible" and covered topics ranging from organic gardening to pot smoking, yoga, surfing competitions and everything in-between. Elfick was also a staff writer with Go-Set magazine and featured regularly in its pages.

He and Falzon had the idea to create "Morning of the Earth" and he would become Co-Director / Co-Producer with Albert Falzon for both films "Morning of the Earth" and "Crystal Voyager".

THe way the films credits were written was later changed in a deal stuck between Falzon and Elfick, Albe's name would be removed from Crystal Voyager. "Crystal Voyager" would from that time on only carry Elfick's name as producer and Elfick's name would be removed from "Morning of the Earth". This deal was done to help clarify ownership rights for the movies and solve any control issues that may eventuate and according to my sources required a fairly large cash payment from Falzon's old friend and surf business man Bruce Raymond in favour of Elfick.

The Arts and Media Alliance website described David in the following way. "An independent filmmaker for the past 30 years, David played an instrumental part in the establishment of the new wave of Australian films internationally. David has produced and directed feature films and high quality television drama, and most recently reunited with director Phillip Noyce as a producer on Rabbit-Proof Fence".

I found a very interesting and informative interview with David Elfick in which he discusses his involvement with Australian film and television right from the very beginning including 'Morning of the Earth" and "Crystal Voyager" please click on this link to see this interview. It runs for approximately 35 mins. ........View interview.

Crystal Voyager A pinnacle of the surf-movie genre,
Crystal Voyager aims for spiritual transcendence.
Shot in California and the Australian east coast, it documents American surf legend George Greenough's quest to find the perfect wave. The final 23 minute montage, 'Echoes', features footage which takes the viewer underwater, down the faces of huge waves and inside the tubular vortex of waves on the verge of breaking. A sublime experience!
